This scene from The Social Network (2010) is one of my personal favourites of how the perfect combination of scoring and cinematography can truly make a scene. The track - “In The Hall of the Mountain King” - is not a score original to this film, but is still a musical score nonetheless. Composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross arranged and adapted this famous tune from the “Peer Gynt Suite” by 19th century Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, itself the score composed for Henrik Ibsen’s 1867 play Peer Gynt.
Director David Fincher, cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth, and editors Kurt Baster and Angus Wall did an amazing job pairing the fast intensity of the Henley Royal Regatta with this music. As the race advances and the Harvard rowing team grows visibly more anxious, the music matches this pressure with its growing crescendos and increasing tempo. The accented staccato notes are paired with quick shots of the men rowing, the crowd, the final photo finish. The industrial electronic sound only adds to the modern, technology-centric story. And while the scene clocks in at a mere 1 minute and 43 seconds, I believe it should be considered one of the best pairings of film and musical score in recent cinema history. Watch it and you’ll see exactly what I mean.

“I’m in love with you,” he said quietly.
“Augustus,” I said.
“I am,” he said. He was staring at me, and I could see the corners of his eyes crinkling. “I’m in love with you, and I’m not in the business of denying myself the simple pleasure of saying true things. I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.”

I’m incredibly happy, I’m incredibly lucky, I found myself in a pattern of being attracted to people who were somehow unavailable, and what I realized was that I was protecting myself because I equated the idea of connection and love with trauma and death. I had to do a lot of work on the couch to really get to a place where I was able to show up to a relationship with someone who was actually capable of being in one — and that took a lot of trial and error. I definitely want kids, I want to share. - Zachary Quinto {x}
